The historic stone built cottage was originally part of a cruck barn providing shelter for livestock. The Manor House cellar was built with an underground tunnel leading to the ancient Penistone Church a notorious landmark in the Pennine market town. Recently the Church’s interior and exterior have enjoyed a well-earned sympathetic programme of restoration. It is said that Oliver Cromwell visited the Manor House with the intention of visiting Penistone Church to remove priests who were spreading Catholic beliefs and holding ceremonies. The visit took place in the mid 16oo’s. A coping stone on the upper landing of the cottage is dated 1642. There are a number of Halls in the Penistone area which have still retained their Priest Holes - originally a hiding place for priests to escape the threat of execution.
Fortunately, times are somewhat more relaxed now in Penistone where a key asset from its heritage is the Farmers’ market selling high quality local produce and where the goods are well known for their value and variety.
